I have a 3 year old iMac, a 2 year old Pc, a 9600xt all in wonder card, and a Sony camcorder (TRV-25) with svideo to firewire passthrough. Both computers have dual core Intel CPUs. Which combination would be best for converting VHS to DVD? I have had some problems with the all in wonder card, should I get an El Gato device for the Mac?

The all in wonder is an analogue capture card, the TRV25 is a MiniDV camcorder that outputs digital signals over Firewire. Get a Firewire card for one or the other computer and transfer to hard drive with WinDV.

What software do you have/use? Do you have iMovie HD or iMovie8 on the Mac?

The PC should have a Firewire card + WinDV for best capture

The pass-through DV camcorder will so most things the Elgato will do except the tuner.

iMovie8 will directly capture pass through or DV camcorder playback (via Firewire). You edit in iMovie then pass the project to iDVD for authoring.
