I'm using OS 9.2
I'm also using DVDextractor 0.9b along with a SuperDrive. I'm able to extract either a .vob file or a .m2v with a .ac3 file. What do I do with these files once they are on the hard drive. My goal is to be able to edit them in either Premiere or Final Cut Pro and then burn them with iDVD.
Do I need to convert one of the files to quicktime before I edit? If so, how do I do it.
Thanks,
John

I've been reading the guides and they are all for PC. Where can I find a guide for the MAC?
Thanks,
John -
wow i didnt know there were apps to extract vob files on a mac, that cool, now all you need is to get an app to encode it to mpeg, mov, or divx (avi) , if anyone knows this would help me alot to since i have a dual g4 533 with nothing much to do with it besides webdesign

If your VOB files are still multiplexed, use bbDEMUX to demultiplex the video and audio parts.
Use MacMPEG2Decoder to transcode the MPEG2 video into a Quicktime file. Use either the DV codec or the Sorenson 3 codec for best quality.
Encode your audio to WAV or AIFF using mAC3dec.
Use Quicktime 5 Pro to get the audio and video back together in one file. You may also skip this part if your final goal is VideoCD or DVD.
Encode to MPEG1 for VideoCD using Astarte M.Pack (defunct, but still available in cyberspace), or this neat little app called Movie2MPEG.
Encode to MPEG2 for SuperVCD or DVD using Astarte M.Pack.
Burning the discs are a whole other issue. Toast is picky, but there are ways around Toast's issues, mostly using vcdToolsX. -
thanks alot for all the info antny, one more question, are all these apps for os9 only or are there any native osx apps ?

wouldn't it just be easier to get a PC for Video editing? i dont mean to be an ass but theres alot of stuff that Macs just arent widely compatible for, one is VCDs and similar video editing. i personally dont like macs (have to work with them everyday in my commercial art class) and they are greatly easy to use which is good, but they just arent compatible. but whatever is your choice. i suggest listening to AntnyMD he seems to know how to deal with it.

bbDEMUX, MacMPEG2Decoder, mAC3dec and Movie2MPEG have been "carbonized" for OS X, but also run perfectly in OS 9 and Classic mode.
Astarte M.Pack pre-dates OS X and doesn't run inside that operating system. Furthermore, it behaves in weird ways in Classic mode. It works really well in OS 9. In fact, I think I read somewhere that Apple bought M.Pack and now calls it iDVD or something.
I've only ever used vcdToolsX, and I think it's a great program. It uses the flexible tools from VCDImager.
I also forgot to mention one other program, to multiplex MPEG2 encodes. Its called MPEGMissingTools.
As for buying a PC to create video -- PCs are flexible in this regard and will definitely do the encoding part much more quickly. However, part of the challenge (and the fun) in creating video on computers is not really the ease ... I mean, for pirates, yes.... but, I think its just fun to conquer the difficulties. Creating VCDs in the way I described won't be fast or easy, but so far I have been very impressed with the quality of the finished product, even VCDs! I am not claiming to get DVD quality from a VCD made with a Mac, but for the quality I am getting, MACS KICK ASS! Period. Every since my iMac G3 came home, I haven't looked back.
And conquering how to make a VCD on a Mac only took me three weeks!

thanks alot Antny, yeah i have a pc at home too not just a mac , and i curently do use the pc backup my dvds to divx, but i would still love to konw how to do it on a mac. Macs are the best in my opinion.
antny i also asked if the apps were osx native because im trying to only use osx native apps, it seem slike almost evey app under clasis sucks and is slow. but thanks for all the info -
None of the encoding apps I mentioned as carbonized appear to be OS X native. Making compliant VCDs from DVDs on a Mac will be slow. If you can accept the slightly nonstandard VCDs Toast makes, Toast's VCD encoder is the way to go ... There, you just drag the Quicktime movie into Toast and it encodes to VCD then burns.
