I have sonic dvd burner software on my pc that came with it. When I try to burn a movie to dvd, it says it cannot make a thumbnail because there is no decoder installed. I have burnt movies on this software before with no problems. Am I doing something wrong?

What is the source file? Is it already DVD compatible? Are you converting to DVD format? Is your software trying to convert to DVD format? Exactly at what step you get the error message?

Also I advise - go through the fantastic "guides" & "How to" already posted on this forum by some really amazing people !

I'm a bit confused also. What does a thumbnail have to do with DVD burning? If you mean a MPEG thumbnail on a folder, then it sounds like your MPEG decoder has a problem. Or is this a Windows Explorer error? Then it may be a file association problem.

    And welcome to our forums.

By thumbnail, I would the OP means in My Computer or Windows Explorer. This would indicate the codec needed isn't installed or properly registered with WMP. However, as noted above, thumbnails have nothing to do with burning.

I also am trying to use Roxio (Sonic) MyDVD to burn a Video DVD. It may not be the best program but it's been OK so far. At least the DVD's burned with it play on all of my players. However when I use the Add Files function in MyDVD to import a previously saved .avi file (Xvid I believe) I also get the error message "Could not make a thumbnail. Make sure you have the appropriate decoder installed. -47010". I could get a better authoring program but I'd prefer not to. Hopefully this is enough information. How do I obtain the appropriate decoder and how do I install it? By the way, a workaround is to use Windows Movie Maker to import the file(s) > Save to My Computer > Other Settings > High Quality Video which creates a .wmv file that can then be imported into MyVideo however this seems to require converting the file twice, which takes a LONG time.

Go the Tools section. Go the the area called Codecs. Find Xvid on the list and follow the links. Install the Xvid codec. If MyDVD still refuses to work then get something better.

This worked. I have no idea if both steps are required, or why it worked, but it did. First: Open Windows Explorer, go to folder containing your .avi files. Set view to thumbnails. Second: Start > Programs >> DivX Codec > Decoder Configuration Utility > Tab Decoder > Uncheck "Use advanced hardware overlay". My bet is that the second step was the relevant one.
