    hi,
Im wondering, say you have a vid file 1 gig
and you want to just get the best bits out of it and
say reduce it to 80 meg.
Is there any way of doing that ?

On the audio side... its easy to put audio files into
audacity and edit the files down
why should it be so difficult with video ?

THe file size doesn't say anything. How long is the clip?

You can use for example handbrake and convert to avi xvid or mp4 h264, under the video tab set the video size to 80 mb and convert and see how it looks like.

Or do you want to edit it? Windows Movie Maker.

I would guess 25 mins, 30 mins long

I have vids of various sizes but often theres about
10 % in there that I may wish to keep
but how to get that 10% out... there's the rub.

We download and play these files but we have no
control over them, we can t get at them

I suppose its video editing software that Im after
given the right equipment I could become the next

Absolutely there is. The easiest way to do it depends on what file type you have now, and/or what file type you';re happy for the end result to be.

Over here on the left <<<=== under the "How To" heading is the word "edit" - it is likely to have some good info for you.
    If in doubt, Google it.

    A couple of ways -

    1) Use GSpot - it will tell you what the file type is and also codecs are used.

    2) Turn off "Hide File Extensions" - you will then get the 3 digit extension of the file which tells us what type of container your file is.
    If in doubt, Google it.

install the latest k lite codec pack and there is a good chance it will work in vdub and if not, use avisynth +directshowsource

Pay no attention to the guy above you....

NEVER EVER INSTALL A CODEC PACK!!!!!

Use G-Spot to determine what codec is needed for the video and it will tell you if it is installed.
Then only install codecs as you need them.

I was about to say the same thing. In my experience codec packs have caused far more problems than they solve. Much better to only install what you need.
    If in doubt, Google it.

You need the virtualdub-mpeg2 version to open MPEG-2 video.
    If in doubt, Google it.

AVIDeMux can be used for simple cutting (I frame accurate, meaning about half a second accuracy in MPEG2) filtering and or conversion.

You could also use the newer VirtualDub versions and install the MPEG plugin. It's shown on the VD toolpage to the left <<<<<
Or try VirtualDub Mod as it accepts MPEG format videos. But VD outputs as a AVI type file, so you need to be aware of that. VD also had hundreds of filters available, so that's a big plus for it.

And this doesn't seem to have anything to do with Video Streaming. Moving you to our Video Conversion Forum.

    And welcome to our forums.
