Did Womble go out of business? Their website (www.womble.com) is down, and email sent to their support address is returned.

I don't know. I can only say the following.

Their web server can't be resolved via DNS. It could just be a temporary DNS problem. Then again, it could be that they are out of business. It could be a problem with their ISP having turned them off for non-payment,
exceeding bandwidth or some such thing.

Their domain is still under valid registration with Network Solutions, but that doesn't mean that they aren't out of business as we use Network Solutions at work and you have to pay in advance for domain registration.

Until someone can provide some firm details, I'd suggest you wait a week or so if they still don't respond to email and the web page won't come up, then yes, they are probably out of business.

They have been fairly active on their web site in the support forums lately. Just yesterday I saw posts from the forum Admin from May 6th, so I doubt they went out of business. The Admin even gave a few hints about upcoming upgrades, maybe even something about AVCHD in the future. Womble is working to upgrade the mpeg encoder (I tried the test version) to use Mainconcept encoder. I'm guessing it's a technical issue with their web servers.

If they did go out of business, I speculate an internet advertising group would quickly purchase the domain to post google adwords and make a few bucks off the residual traffic. Until that happens, my money would say they are still around.

That's a good question, but it's also very bad for business when this happens because customers may think the worse. They might assume you're out of business, can't pay your bills, are too incompetent to keep the web page up, etc. My earlier reply suggested that the original poster show some patience and give Womble a week to straighten things out and it seems that Womble has fixed whatever problem kept them offline.

What does a "web wizard" have to do with a site being down temporarily? When your friends leave town without telling you, do you run to the police and tell them that you suspect murder?

But, you could be joking (I hope).

Again, one thing has nothing to do with the other.

Knowing horw to get to a web site does not make one a "web wizard". Neither does knowing that when a site is down for a day, it's not Armageddon.

You don't need to be a fireman to know whether or not a house is on fire.

He didn't say how long he had been trying, but give the OP a break. A lot of businesses have gone under in the past year. It's not unreasonable to wonder what is going on when a commercial website one has not visited before or has not visited in a while is unavailable for an extended period.
