  1. I am making a family dvd disc with GUI Dvd Author-my finished dvd has no sound on the menu with some dvd players! Is this simply down to the fact that most discs only use AC3 throughout for both menu and movie? I am wondering 1. Does dvd author only support mp2 and wav for menus? 2. Does dvd author support ac3 for the movie audio?

    3. If ac3 is the standard, what program would be more suited, as sound is quite important to me?
    4. What formats do ALL dvd players support, as far as menu sound is concerned, no matter how old the home dvd player, to ensure compatibility?
thanks for any helpful info if possible i am also wondering what other programs are out there that rival dvd author Gui, i find it a great tool, and it does everything i need, bar this simple sound issue. Thanks for any help if possible

First, you may benefit from reading "What is DVD" in the upper left-hand corner of this page.

A compliant DVD must have at least one sound track in AC3 or PCM (in the US; PAL can also use MP2). Many US players will support audio in MP2, but not all.

Authoring tools differ in what they'll accept as input. What counts in the end, though, is the audio output they produce. If it produces AC3 or PCM, then it should play in all players that are compliant. If it produces MP2, it will play in many, but not all players. If it produces anything else, then the success rate diminishes rapidly.

  3. thanks for the info, although it doesnt seem to be much clearer with the list of formats dvd author can use for audio in a main video, and audio in the menus. it seems dvd author only supports mp2 for menus, as they dont play in everything- but all my movie files seem to play in any dvd player, so the program must still be able to give ac3 as the movie track?

I think most modern dvd players now play Mp2, im not in the usa and the 2 players i have here work fine, so it does seem to be becoming more of a standard.

If my only choice in dvd author is having PCM sound on my menus (if its possible), then i am wondering what the best tool would be that can convert audio to pcm format? If dvd author only accepts Mp2, its no major loss as long as the videos i add arent mp2 as well, and they work in all players. it is a shame though as with ac3 support dvd author would have been perfect for my needs! cheers anyway

I am wondering what kind of PCM is the most common, eg 8/16/24/32 bit, signed or unsigned etc? I dont think dvd author supports any though.

Supposedly PCM is used with alot of music video, and even on blu ray discs, despite taking up far more space than dolby AC3, which 6 channel sound is possible. I have decided the only way to go is to use ffmpeg to convert all my sound to AC3, and then add it to dvdauthor for my menu audio. thanks

  4. Which authoring engine do you use in GfD? MuxMan or dvdauthor?
MuxMan is more compatible (more strict to the DVD standard).
Do you talk about still menus with sound? This is sometimes a problem...
