Would you say the brand of actual blank DVD R or DVD burner is more important? Specifically, Dual Layer discs. I read another topic that said the brand of disc does matter (I bought a 10-pack of DL discs that was less than $20). Thanks.

You can try other brands of DL discs, but if you get a good burn, you would be among the very few that have been successful.
As mentioned, Verbatim is the only consistent DL disc out there at present. And using ImgBurn to burn the disc is also recommended as the best DL burning program out there. (Freeware) Verbatim might cost a bit more, but I've had 100% successful burns with them. Other brands, good luck.

Brand does not matter as much as manufacturer, no.
Verbatim is the brand name used by Mitsubishi (MCC) media, and MCC makes good discs. Other brands don't have MCC. Buy the disc because it is MCC, not for the pretty Verbatim label.
On the other hand, Memorex, TDK and HP are all the same discs -- manufactured by CMC. People who would then say "HP is better than TDK" would be make a completely stupid statement, because the discs are identical. This is why brand does not matter.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

Thanks for the feedback. I think I found the type of disc on the DVD Media List, and other people didn't like it.
But what I'm really looking for is playback quality on a DVD. So my topic of 'getting a quality burn' is probably misleading. The one disc I've burned works in my Sony upconvert DVD player with no problems. And I know that no burned disc will ever match the quality of a pressed disc.
So my real question should have been does the brand of disc have any effect on playback quality in a DVD player?
