I have a 1TB LaCie external drive that the power has been an issue since I bought it in 2007. When I say issue, I have had to order 3 power supplies since purchased with the last one not fixing the problem like before. I have a feeling its the external case and not the drives.

The external drive has 2 500GB Barracuda 7200.10 ultra ata drives. My question is........

How can I take these 2 500GB drives and plug them into a pc internally to test if the drives work and have my video files on there still! (fingers crossed!) Being that these are 2 drives is it raided somehow? If I plug into my pc, is there something I need to be aware of just in case the drives are good. I would hate for them to be good and I screw it up somehow by hooking up to my pc.

I know this is a video site, but you guys are pretty helpful and if it matters it is video files I am trying to save!

You should be able to plug them into your motherboard (IDE?) and you're good to go.

I doubt that they are Raided. When you plug in the enclosure, does it show up as 1 or 2 drives?

Which exact model LaCie drive and how did you set it up? Other dual LaCie drives allow various RAID (usually zero or one) or spanned addreessing or separate drive addressing (two drive letters). Which do you have?

Also the drive can be formatted for MAC, FAT (many partitions) or NTFS. Which do you have?

If you have it set to RAID or span, it will be more difficult to access data if you take it apart. Best solution is to copy your data to a separate drive before you attempt any disassembly.

well the 2 drives inside the external case show up as a single 1 TB, and not 2 drives. The type of LaCie drive is a LaCie Big Disk
Hi-Speed USB 2.0. You think I could go to Frys or something and purchase a new enclosure? Or do you think hooking up to my system should be good enough. I just want it up long enough to get the videos and pictures I need! Right now all I get is a blinking blue light on the Lacie drive...the fan on the enclosure isnt even working.

    This one?

It says it is factory set to RAID Zero so no, you can't just take the drives out and connect to PATA/SATA without destroying data.

This is the 1TB model, also internally configured RAID Zero. A very bad idea if you ask me.
