  1. Hey All

After running into win32/Agent.ODG virus, I have decided to get some antivirus, there are so many, I used to use NOD32 (a while ago), but the aforementioned virus was not going to be removed via NOD32, even in safe mode, even with a NOD32 boot disk, so I googled around & I came to the conclusion that Avast was the one that was going to remove this virus, & it did, since the new version of the software has anti-rootkit based on GMER technology, GMER being well known to find the most descrete rootkits on your PC, anyway, I just wanted to know what others use out there & what the pros & cons are of there selected antivirus

  2. Avast AV and SuperAntiSpyware.
I visited my Aunt and Uncle over the weekend and their PC was a mess. They had Norton but when I ran it(after updating it) nothing was found, when I ran Avast and SuperAntiSpyware they found 3 viruses and 137 spyware cookies.Another app I used was CurrPorts ,it will kill any open ports used by malware.
Then I ran CCleaner to get rid of the crap and fix the registry, their PC was back to normal and they were happy.

    Good Programs:
    Avast
    AVG
    McAfee
    SuperAntiSpyware

    Worthless programs IMO:
    Windows Defender
    Norton
    Ad-Aware(7+)

  4. AV for current antivirus, in the past I used McAfee
ZoneAlarm just to see outgoing connections (seems EVERY payware/freeware program calls home now...I hate that)
    SuperAntiSpyware for a monthly test

However it's worth noting, I've actually never had an *active* virus/spyware/malware on any of my computers at home. I've had downloaded files test possitive for infections but I just delete them.

Then again, I don't click on those links that say "Hey Moron, click here so we can infect your computer"
tgpo famous MAC commercial, You be the judge?

I also use the same combination as hech54. Comodo is a bit of a pest till it self configures, but it does block outgoing malware packets. Vista's firewall by default does not.

And I might mention that some malware will reside in your restore files. You might want to delete them, then create a new one when you are sure the PC is clean.

I would also recommend backing up the now clean boot drive with something like Acronis True Image or similar, then all you have to do is restore the PC via the image, which only take a short time to replace the infected volume. ( I mention this as the PC owner will likely do all this over again, as I have witnessed more than once. )

  9. i've used norton systemworks for the last 5 years or so on the 4 computers here. never had anything get past it. has anti: virus, trojan, spyware, malware and firewall - all running and using less than 15mb, with no drain on the cpu. i don't get the norton bashers. i tried the "free" a/v's and none protected as well, even with a dozen other free a-s/t/m programs running using ram and resources all at the same time.

i pick up the new versions of norton - free after rebate at fry's every year.

p.s. - one of the computers is used daily by an adventurous 13 year old, who likes downloading the newest games/im's/apps and things?!?....... norton hasn't let me down yet.

Exactly the same here. I have the same "suite" on all my family's PCs, and have never been invaded. You can get the Pro version of SAS for around $30 for lifetime updates & it can be used on 2 systems.

My Mom recently had PC issues (monitor wouldn't fire up), and since I live 3000 miles from her, took it into a local shop, who found a bad mobo & replaced it . But they also wiped her drive (!) & stuck on XP Home SP2 (had XP Pro SP3 Nlited before), and NO A/V app at all!! Not to mention , all her emails & address book gone.
Was able to walk her thru getting LogMeIn installed, and was able to get things back to the way they should be.
