Hello, I have a simple request. I am looking for a simple method, software to transfer downloaded videos, which come usually in avi, so I can burn them on a DVD.
Greetings John Grey

A simple search through our tools section would give a list of good tools. The simplest is the payware ConvertXtoDVD.

Stupid question, perhaps, but do you mean a DVD-Video disc, or a data DVD?
If cameras add ten pounds, why would people want to eat them? -
Simple? Then I suppose you need an all-in-one converter. Take your pick:

I believe FAVC and DVDFlick are well-regarded among current freeware offerings. ConvertXtoDVD is a favorite for many, although it's payware.
Welcome to the forum and good luck.
[EDIT] Aw, you both beat me to it. :P You know, the previous post is not a dumb question. What IS the objective?Pull! Bang! Darn! -
Hello, all of you, and thanks for some really quick answers
Well, I admit I did not understand that question. When I have downloaded a movie to my computer and want to burn it to a disc, then I do this to watch the movie on the TV, using the DVD player...
I guess I will have to re-check my question, it must have been unclear...
As for the converting, I found out I need an (.iso or.dmg) file to play the DVDs here in Japan. Can I get those using these converters?
One more thing that puzzles me, although I might be in the wrong forum for this one:
I got the necessary cables to connect my motebook, an HP 530, to my TV, but only the sound comes out, no picture. Is there something that needs to be switched on or off??
Thanks again... -
You don't need an ISO or a DMG. An ISO (or .DMG file) is simply an image of a DVD or CD. It can be a useful format for doing whole of disc copies, but is certainly not needed for playback or burning. Whoever told you that is talking through a small hole usually used for making other noises.
The reason your initial question was unclear was simply that many new players will play many avi files without the need to convert them to a full DVD structure. As you didn't specify if you needed a full DVD structure, or simple to burn the AVI file to disc, further questions were asked. I simply assumed you were after a conversion to a full DVD structure.
As for your notebook - once you have everything connected, you will have to switch your display to point to the TV. This is usually done through a display utility or through the video drivers.Read my blog here.

Hello very tired gunslinger..
It is probably true, I will have to "switch my display to point to the TV". Now, what is a display utility, and where would I be looking for the needed video driver...?
I tried another notebook on the same TV and used a cable with a VAG plug on both ends. With this othernotebook the computer displays on the TV exactly as it does on the computer monitor. But when I try to play a movie, it will play on the monitor, but on the TV only the frame of WMP will show, no movie, just black...
Also, for the DVDs... I have a movie downloaded from the internet on my HDD. It is as usual an .avi file. I want to burn this movie onto a DVD so I can watch it on the large screen DVD. That is all....
I have no idea if I need a full DVD structure, and as a matter of fact, I do not even know what a full DVD structure is... all I want to know is how to go about burning the disc. From what I have so far found out, I cannot simply burn the .avi on a DVD and then watch it. I have to convert it first.
Which software do I use for that, and when asked by that software, which format do I chose? Or whatever else might be necessary to do what I want....
Greetings, John Grey -
I have already told you which tool I think you should use - see my first post.
If you are connected via VGA and get a black screen in the Media Player then either turn off the overlay in the graphics driver, or a use a player with more flexible display properties - MPC HC, VLC or The KM Player would be best.Read my blog here.

Fn + F4 may work for your model, but it is not universal (which is why you get a manual). For example, Toshiba use Fn + F5 for switching monitors. And the function keys only work if you have manufacturers utilities installed. if you perfer to have a faster machine stripped of all the pre-install offal then you may not get these hotkeys at all.

Thanks Gunslinger,
yeah, seems the computer industrie is not really that organized... but would it not make sense to write all those little things into a handbook?
O.k., they are in the businesss of making money, and printing them costs money, but at least they could publish all those little things on their webpage..
