"re-converting" AVI file

I play my movies on my dvd player with usb in it. But, alas, "same name trick" (like ex. movie.avi and movie.srt) doesnt work. But yesterday, I was able to watch a movie (single AVI file) which included a subtitle that can be turned on/off, I believe it's called "softcoded"(?)....How do I "re-convert" my AVI to AVI (too) with softcoded subtitle in it? thanks in advance!

@Midzuki: its only one of those "clone" which is china made

'just to clarify...the DVD disc works A-fine with subtitles....it's only the movie when played via its USB port that i'm having problem with
