To begin with, I would recommend against the use of Nero or Roxio, as there are far better tools available. They may not look as pretty, but they are reliable, better quality, and much smaller.

ConvertXtoDVD (not free) is probably the easiest solution. FAVC, DVD Flick or AVStoDVD are other, freeware, alternatives. These will all produce a working DVD, ready to burn.

Burn the DVD to a quality disc with Imgburn (freeware).

The only potential stumbling block is the subtitles. What format are they ? Not all programs handle all subtitle formats.

Finally, if your DVD player can handle Divx/Xvid encoded AVI files, it may well be able to read the subtitles as well, if they are named correctly. Generally this means movie1.avi, movie1.srt (for example).

  4. You're too vague about what you want to do. When you play the AVI, don't you see the subs? If not, install DirectVobSub. Is keeping them separate while playing the AVI enough, or do you want to burn them into the video? If you want them embedded, then a full reencode will be needed. If for AVI, open the AVI in AutoGK and then use the F8 trick to add in the subs. Here's the Baldrick guide for that:

If you want to convert the AVI to a DVD with selectable subtitles, there are many programs for that, but since I don't use any of them, I don't know which ones can use IDX/SUB files, or require you to OCR them to some text based subtitle format. Someone else can help you there. Just tell us what the final format is to be (avi with burned in subs, DVD with selectable subs, or something else entirely).

  5. ConvertXtoDVD will definitely convert avi with sub/idx subtitles to DVD. It is a little confusing to use, but it will do the job. Before you use it, though, play the avi with sub/idx (total of 3 files in the folder) and make sure the subtitles play correctly on your computer. Make sure you have Vobsub installed on you computer.
