Well I have had this player for a while now and was using it with an old 40GB external hdd and I only had movies on it, just a couple. I recently bought a Western Digital 1TB My Book external hdd and it was already in Fat32 so I loaded a avi file, connected it to the player, and it played fine. Ok so I wanted to load this thing up with everything I have, Movies, Anime, TV Shows, Ect. I was looking around google to try and see If I was going to be able to do that when I came accross this site http://blog.techflaws.org/2008/11/01/philips-dvp3260-5990-faq/ and read this,
Does that mean that it will be able to read 300 folders with a total of only 648 files per each folder for a total of 194,400 files? Or that it can only read a total of 648 files between all 300 folders?According to the manual the DVP can handle 300 folders with 648 files each.
Do you understand my question? If not let me know and I will try to explain better.
Has anyone ever tried to see how many files and folders it can actually read?

From previous posts on this subject, it is my understanding that it is 648 in each folder. The manual, on p.34 is unclear on this subject ..." max of 300 folders and 648 files".

648 files total. No discussion. try sticking 600+ jpegs on there. 648 is an odd number.. normally these things are a binary number minus 1 eg 2^16 minus 1.I don't know what a modded firmware does to this...(vb6robcod)

RabidDog is correct. We've had this discussion before. It is 300 total folders and 648 total files regardless of how many folders there are. I also have no idea where this 648 comes from or the 300 as both are odd numbers to be limits.
If you need a playback device without such limits, the Western Digital HD TV player may be up your alley. It also works fine with NTFS formatted USB drives. -
I was able access 1500+ JPG images (about 15 folders with 100 files each) without any problems using one of the vb6robcod mods. It's far superior to the stock firmware.

I am using the one with the divx logo.
Maybe I should try and load up some pictures in some folders and see what happens. Like make a folder and add about 700 pictures and make another folder and another 700 pics and see if it reads them all. Then I could try it next with some videos. Make two folders and add some 700 avi files to one folder and then another 700 avi files to another folder and see if it reads them all. It will probably take me a while to load all those avi files. Will probably do that on the weekend but if anybody has experimented (actually done it) with what I'm trying to do please let me know your results. -

1 Folder for TV Shows - Same as above but with tv shows.
1 Folder for Anime - Same as above but with anime.
ECT.
That is my plan so far. Well that is what I would like to do but if there is a limit to 648 files for all 300 folders then I will have to partition my hdd into a couple of parts and make each partition into a section for each one, (like example I have above ) and make more once I get each one full with 648 files. That will suck big time if I have to do that. -
I'll update this after I test out what I want to do. I will make 2 folders and load each one with about 700 files in each file for a total of 1,400 files and see it will read all files.
If anyone else has actually proven that it will hold 648 files for each file out from 300 folders please let me know. Also I you have loaded over 648 files in one folder and all the player would read is 648 please let me know too. It will save me some time to actually have someone tell me that they have done it themselves and that it wouldn't read more that 648 files in one folder.
Also thanks to jagabo for letting me know that it can read 1,500+ files at about 15 folders and 100 files in each folder. -
UPDATE: with pics.
Ok so I loaded up some stuff onto my new 1TB hdd.
Main screen on the puter. Any questions let me know. I have 26 folders (1 folder for each letter of the alphabet) inside the Movies folder, 26 folders inside the Anime folder, and 26 folders in the Cartoons folder. They are all empty as of right now. I will be adding some avi files soon.

Tv Shows. Notice the folders(31) and files(45) numbers. Any questions let me know.

Pics. Notice the folders(2) and files(1,406) numbers. Only 647 files per folder were visible. 647 files X 2 folders = 1,294 files. I'll explain reason in a little bit.

Inside the pics folder on the player. Notice the 2 folders.

Inside Folder 1. Notice it says 001/648 out of a total of 702 files I put in it. It is reading the folder as file # 1. Then it displays 647 files.

Inside Folder 2. Notice it says 001/648 out of a total of 702 files I put in it. It is reading the folder as file # 1. Then it displays 647 files.

Check the bottom of the screen in this pic.

For good measure. Only first 648 files shown.

Ok so what have we learned. That it does read more that 648 TOTAL files. Mine is reading a total of 1,294 jpg files between 2 folders + 45 avi files between 31 folders (see pic 2).
Any questions let me know. -
u r so lucky u even have this player. u cant find it in stores anymore

Friend of mine just bought one from AMAZON.COM and it came REGION 0 because I tried the hack and it worked but it was already set to "0" and yes we tested a region coded UK PAL DVD and it worked A-OK on his standard def USA NTSC Television.
He just ordered it like a week or so ago.
