I'm having problems with playing an .avi file that's resolution is 724x320 using the USB stick and the player states that it doesn't support this resolution. Is there a set up or would a firmware update help? Also I read that this model will not read an .avi that is over a gig. I have a few movies that are over but haven't played them yet, am I going to have a problem?
    Many thanks ...........Dave

The 5990, like most standalone DVD players that support DivX/Xvid playback, only supports SD resolutions - that is, up to the maximum resolution of DVDs (720x576 (PAL), 720x480 (NTSC)). If your AVI/.divx video exceeds that, you'll have to re-encode. Here's a list of some of the things you may want to watch out for when working with video for a DivX/Xvid-capable DVD player: https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/295067-Common-DivX-DVD-Players-AVI-Playback-problems%21

I think (but I could be wrong) is that the 1G limit usually applies to rather old AVIs (earlier AVI format specifications). As long as they don't have any of the 'problems' listed in the above-linked thread, you can always re-index them using VirtualDub. (or re-encode them, of course.)
The 5990 might have more difficulty with AVIs over 4GB (especially from USB drives, as they must be in FAT32 format, which doesn't support single files ~4GB or higher.)

As the 5990 supports playing AVI/.divx from USB flash drives, it's easy to test the videos (1GB or otherwise), anyway.

If cameras add ten pounds, why would people want to eat them?

The largets avi/xvid file I have played on my 5990 is 3Gb and it played fine all the way through. It also played fine after I added subs and chapters with aviaddxsubs.
