When using Nero to transfer a DV video from a DV camera to the computer, Nero gives a choice of either DV1 or DV2. What is the difference between the two?

You use the one that your editing software prefers. Today, most programs accept either type.

  3. Note that Windows Media Player versions 9, 10 and 11 cannot play the Type 1 files - only the Type 2. A shame, since Type 2 is really just a kludge for not-so-state-of-the-art software. Type 1 really should be the de facto standard and WMP should be compatible....

It certainly does as that is the only type I transfer DV in and I can assure you tht that both the video and audio play fine.

Interesting - what OS are you running and what software are you using to transfer the DV files? I've been trying to identify the problem that a lot of people have reported with Type 1 DV AVI files and Media Player. Perhaps your setup will have provide the key bit of info.

    Thanks,

    John.

I'm on XP with the latest updates and using Ulead's capture program that comes with MSP... regardless any sstem should play type 1... This is the first time I've ever heard this mentioned here and having read 1000's of posts That must mean it's an issue with your system. Add to that the only thing I could find remotely related to WMP not playing type 1 is a psot by you in a newsgroup. On a final note Windows Movie Maker outputs type 1 so it would hardly be feasible for it not to play type 1 since the viewer itself in movie maker is... you guessed it WMP.

  7. I've tried multiple systems, virtual machines, completey fresh installs of XP Pro SP2 etc and it always happens. I have seen other posts reporting problems with WMP of a similar type.

BTW, the player within MM is NOT WMP, it is a DirectShow renderer graph. MM will play all my Type 1 DV AVIs just fine and, using the DirectShow development tool - GraphEdit - I also have no problems. Only WMP... Somewhere in the bowels of WMP, there is a problem building the right kind of DirectShow filter graph - something related to the audio.

On clean Win2K SP4 systems, everything is fine but as soon as WMP is upgraded, the problem occurs.

I think I might post a poll to see just what the real world experience is out there. I'm definitely not the only one with this problem - eg http://www.eggheadcafe.com/ng/microsoft.public.windowsmedia/post14498989.asp or

For what it's worth, I just captured some type 1 DV with WinDV and the file plays (audio and video) in Windows Media Player 9 and 10 on 3 machines here (including a notebook recently updated with SP2).

None of these are "out of the box" XP since other video applications have also been installed. The file also plays in the Quicktime player and PowerDVD but not in the VLC player.

  9. Hi, Thanks for the info.

I tried another system - same problem. I tried some older files - they played but these were DV files with no audio. That got me thinking so I disabled the soundcard in my main system , rebooted and the Type 1 files play okay.

Most of the systems I have tried have the same soundcard - SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio using the Analog Devices Version 5.12.1.3535 drivers. Time to dig around for some alternative drivers....

Clearly, a unusually incompability between WMP and this particular sound card.

Although it may not have anything to do with this specific problem, there is another factor that creates havoc in systems. That is software installation programs that are too intrusive as far as system settings. Did you ever install a graphics software program and find that without even asking you it changed the file associations to launch the graphics files with the new program? I recently installed a video editor program and without asking, it turned off autorun. It’s a good practice whenever a sudden change in your computer operation occurs to be suspicious of any recent software installations. An easy way to eliminate this as the source of the problem is to do a system restore to a point prior to the suspect software installation. If the system change or problem goes away, you found the source of the problem.

If you find autorun suddenly disabled, this page on Microsoft's web site gives some very useful information on how to turn autorun back on. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;330135

Be more precise with your terminology. It's the AVI that is type 1 or 2 NOT THE "DV"

MpegEncoder, a post like yours does nothing useful. We have a few social mutants on this forum who get some sort of perverse kick out of posting "corrections" like yours. In common expression, DV1 and DV2 or DV Type 1 and DV Type 2 are the most frequently used terms. If you are going to do a linguistic anthropological breakdown of all of the commonly used terms used with the topics covered on this forum, you are going to be a very busy AND disliked person. If you want people on this forum to be impressed with you, say something useful, don't play verbal tidily-winks.

You are both right. Type1 and Type2 mainly refer to DV stream construction.

But also are applied to the way they are stored in the avi container (interleaved or separate audio).

Posts like yours do equally little.

I don't give a crap what you think the "common expression" for something is. I am trying to help people realize that linguistic accuracy is important, particularly in technical areas.

It is actually the AVI container that is Type 1 or Type 2. Both contain the EXACT same DV content. Type 2 has an additional audio stream (that is actually redundant).

And, for your information mister correct-the-correcter guy, I've been helping people here for almost 4 years and I don't need your help to know when to make a comment.

I do enjoy the irony of you getting your “kick” out of correcting me. Are we supposed to be “impressed with you”? Are you the moral giant that will keep us all in our place?

I suppose you've reviewed all my old posts so that you know all about me.

If my post was “verbal tidily-winks”, then yours is verbal masturbation.

    Have a nice day.

DV-Type 1 has always played fine on my WMP XP setup...must be an incompatibility somewhere
good thing you mentioned it as now you can find out what's happening and correct it

MpegEncoder, I don't know what you're on, but I'll do my best to break this down into little pieces for you.

    1. I am the OP. I asked a question about Nero's option of DV1 or DV2. This question was just repeating the option given in Nero. It wasn't my phraseology; it was Nero's!

    2. As the thread continued, there were a number of very informative posts. In fact, several helpful people answered the question very well before you even showed up.

    3. And then you come along with a quote of my original question follow by your didactic command, "Be more precise with your terminology."

    4. I wasn't trying to be precise; I was asking a question about a choice in a Nero menu using Nero's words - NOT MINE!

    5. I have a lot of things that are a whole lot more important than reviewing your old posts.

    6. If you want to be helpful, great, but don't stomp on someone's question like you are King Balsamic Vinegar or something!

    7. Since you have spent so many years "helping people" and are so good, perhaps you could go to work for Nero and you could rewrite their dialog menu to say AVI Container Type 1 or AVI Container Type 2. Then in the future, if someone else asks the same question, they would do so using terms more pleasing to you! But then again, someone else may show up with their own version of "linguistic accuracy."

    John.

    JohnnyMalaria,
I think you're absolutely correct about that WMP11 won't play type-1 DV AVI "out of the box". I've tried to play type-1 DV AVI files using WMP11 on several (clean) WinXP pro SP3 systems to no avail. What happens is the video shows up and then freeze on the first frame. The whole file can then be viewed by using the seek bar, but it won't play --and there is no sound. type-2 DV AVI plays fine.

I suspected that this behavior was linked to an audio problem, and alas...after installing this AC3-filter http://ac3filter.net/projects/ac3filter ..problem solved!

    Hope this helps (however late!)

    Jon

  18. What a strange solution! I'll have to give it a try. Out of curiosity, what audio chipset do you have? I always have the problem on PCs with Cirrus Crystal chipsets. The only time I haven't experienced the problem is with other chipsets.

Looks like I was a bit too quick with my conclusion. After further testing I have noticed that when playing a type-1 file (as captured by WMM2), after about 20 secs it jumps/stutters, very slightly, but noticeable?

My sound chip is listed on the MSI website as: "Intel® ICH4 Chipset with Integrated Direct Sound AC'97 audio" - and in device mgr as "Matrox Audio Device".

I wish Microsoft would read these forums, and realize that people are wasting immense amounts of time figuring out solutions to what essentially is problems caused by them. I think it is very strange that a DV-AVI file captured using an updated XP system and its bundled software (WMM2), is incompatible with other included software (WMP11)!?
