I used Easy Cap with Windows Movie Maker successfully a year ago. Since then I have had to re-install Windows (XP Home) and have downloaded SP3.
Now I want to use it again to copy an analogue camcorder tape to a file, and then send this to my son to edit on his computer. There were some difficulties getting going, but now I can start capturing into Windows Movie Maker. After a minute, or less, the preview screen starts showing individual frames which are jerkey.
I have tried another tape in the same camcorer and a third tape in a different camcorder, with the same effects. The camcorder screen shows the usual moving picture display.
The same effect happens if I try to capture in Ulead VideoStudio, supplied with the EasyCap.
One post suggested problems when the EasyCap is connected by a USB extension cable, but plugging EasyCap straight into the USB port makes no difference.

If anyonne has suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

According to your profile you are WinXP with 512 MB memory and 160 GB hard drive. If you capture in DV-Avi your file will be in gigabyte size, if your HD is fairly full and fragmented it is looking for empty space to write. Your 512MB memory does not help either, should be ta least 1GB. In any case this is just a preview.
Try to load the file and play it after, even if when during capture frames are jerky, it could still capture OK.
What is your HD rpm? I assume it is IDE drive.
How is it when you play DVD, does it play OK?
Also read this, it may give you some hints.

What tinker said. It's not unusual for a preview window to get out of sync or slow down. I would check the file itself.

I pressed on with capture for about half an hour by which time 184 Mb had been used leaving 23GB of disk space.
You were both quite right, when I ran the stored video it was completely free from jerks
Many thanks for your help - I was worrying unnecessarily.

Not DV then. I hope you're not expecting DVD quality by the time it's been edited and re-encoded.

    Cheers,
    David.

No I wan't expecting DV. The original was taken on an old camcorder, but the better bits look quite good for our purpose.
    Best Wishes
