  1. I'm using nero 7 to burn a wmv-HD video file onto a dual layer disc. My laptop has a dual layer burner but it crashed when I tried to burn the file. I don't believe this is the first time that this has happened.

    Here is the log:

Did you convert the wmv-HD video file to DVD format first(VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders)
or are you burning the wmv-HD video file for data/storage?

Newer Ritek discs are pretty much garbage....especially DL

There are several errors in that log:

    === Scsi-Device-Map ===
    CdRomPeripheral : FENIR ZS1Y3OXU78 1.03 aymh5ski Port 5 ID 0 DMA: Off
I don't think this is your burner, but it should be in DMA mode.
    Disc Manufacturer ID: RITEK...
    Media type ID: D01
I think this is your basic problem. Ritek does not have a good record for DL discs. Try a Verbatim DL + disc and this may solve the problem.

    4:11:28 AM #20 SPTI -1066 File SCSIPassThrough.cpp, Line 179
    CdRom0: SCSIStatus(x02) WinError(0) NeroError(-1066)
    Sense Key: 0x05 (KEY_ILLEGAL_REQUEST)
This is a general error. Probably related to the disc brand or maybe Nero. I would only use ImgBurn for DL discs as Nero also has a bad record for burning DL discs.

    4:34:50 AM #29 SPTI -1135 File SCSIPassThrough.cpp, Line 179
    CdRom0: SCSIStatus(x02) WinError(0) NeroError(-1135)
    Sense Key: 0x03 (KEY_MEDIUM_ERROR)
    Sense Code: 0x0C
This is saying that your burner/software doesn't recognize your DVD media. Again, likely a Ritek or Nero problem.

Bottom line, use only Verbatim DL+ media and ImgBurn and your problems may be solved.

BTW, mr-scarface, you should delete the Nero serial number when you post a Nero log. I''ll do that for you.

  4. No I didn't convert it to DVD format, I want to play this directly in my xbox.

redwudz, thanks for the tips. I will try in imgburn now , and if I get the same problem I will try some verbatim DL discs.

strange though...my DL discs say FUJIFILM on them, not ritek.

  5. alright I'm trying to load this wmv file into imgburn by using WRITE as the mode. but the problem is, it keeps saying Invalid or unsupported image file format. Why does it keep thinking I want to burn an image file? I chose "write files to disc" when imgburn loaded up.

edit: I used "build" mode and changed file system option to UDF and now it's burning so we'll see what happens.

  6. write mode is for disc images only. click mode/build to put it in data burning mode.

The discs may be made by Ritek for Fujifilm. The brand label doesn't mean much, but the manufacturer code does. If that D01 manufacturer code is correct, that's a Ritek disk.

If your burner (Or Nero) doesn't know what the disc is, that may be part of the problem. Some discs don't work well with some burners, and this is especially true with DL discs. Verbatim DL + is about the only dependable DL disc, IMO.

  8. Ok. Well now imgburn got an error during the burn process. I'm going to post the log here but notice that the beginning of it shows that I hadn't enabled UDF mode or something for allowing DL. Also, here's a pic of the error screen I got:

As several others mentioned, Ritek DL is crap, so the normal outcome is what you have experienced: A failed burn.

You might try selecting a slower burn speed (1x, instead of the 2.4x), and fiddling with things like layer breaks, but I would just wait until I bought some decent media before doing much else. It's just a recipe for frustration if you don't use good media (for DL especially).

Like I said, I will try the verbatim DL discs, but it's strange how it's failing burning because I've burned with these same discs before and the outcome was fine.

    mr-scarface,

Besides the inherent quality variation with borderline (or worse) media in general, in this particular case you're trying to burn more than 99% of the disk's capacity. which means you're writing all the way to the outer edge, the most error prone part of the disk, and where the flaws in inferior media become critical. Both burns failed shortly after switching to the second layer, at the outer edge of the disk.

In any situation where the material you're trying to burn is close to the capacity of the disk, you should use only the best media. That would be Verbatim +RDL in this case, which is what has been recommended to you earlier.

It wasn't the reason for failure in this case, but ImgBurn is repeatedly telling you the large file size exceeds the maximum allowed by the ISO 9660 specification. When you're burning large files like this, you should make it a UDF only disk (drop the ISO 9660 part).

Part of the problem with cheaper discs, and this includes single layer and double layer discs, is that the media is not consistent. You may have a good burn with one batch and the next may fail. This can also happen within a cakebox of discs. Another good reason that cheaper brands of discs are not all that economic a choice.

Some members have good luck with Ritek DL discs, but that is usually because they lucked out with the right combination of burner and disc.

But try a Verbatim DL disc. I have yet to have a coaster with them. And that's using several brands of drives. If you still have a failure, consider a external burner instead of your laptop drive.

That is your problem not to mention you are using Ritek DL and a laptop writer.

Yeah, I started the burning process only after I chose UDF as file system. I think I mentioned that in my OP.

Anyhow, i'm gonna have to order some of those verbatim discs. I don't want to throw out the Ritek ones so I guess I'll try burning again but only at 1x and not filling up the disc so much as was recommended.
