Have any other users had this same problem or can offer any advice?

My KISS 1600 seems to have an issue playing back .avi files. When I first installed the new unit I had some old .avi movies my friend gave to me, which played with no problems at all.

The trouble started when I began ripping my own DVDs. I started using 'Magic DVD Ripper' which seemed to work OK. The .avi files ripped and played back on my Vista PC, so I set about ripping away. I noticed that when I tried to play back the .avi files through KISS they did not have any sound. The older .avi's movies I had still played OK, so I assumed it was the ripper I had downloaded.

I installed Xilisoft DVD Ripper Ultimate as well as a few other programs and retried, with the same results.

I have tried 4 different .avi versions - avi, divx, avc, xvid. Curiously xvid produced the opposite result, no picture but perfect sound!

Thinking it may be the wireless connection, I tried playing the avi files from a USB stick connected directly to the player and again the same results. I also tested one of the old .avi files this way and it played fine.

Thinking it my be an issue with my PC or Vista, I installed the Xillisoft software on my XP laptop. Again the results were the same, picture is good, only the sound is missing.

I have also tried other formats such as mp4 which work fine. I could continue ripping all my DVDs to this format, but the picture quality and sound is just not the same.

What is really strange is that these avi files my friend gave me seem to work fine. I know that Xilisoft is one of the better rippers available.

The player claims to support the following video formats: DVD, Win Media 9HD, Win Media 9, H.264/AVC, MPEG, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX3.11, DixX4, Divx5, Nero Digital, Xvid.

If anyone can pass me back some recommendations I would really appreciate it.

What audio codec are you using? mp3,ac3? If you can't choose that in xilisoft then try something else like fairuse wizard, autogk, xvid4psp.

Baldrick, thanks for gettin back quickly.

I was using the codecs supplied with Vista. This morning I downloaded codecs from cccd-project.net at the suggestion from another user with similary and will try them today. I will try the rippers you suggest also later today.

I have a question, you ask which codecs I am using and whether I can chose... are there any particular codecs or settings I should be using? I have been experimenting with various formats. The xilisoft software allows many settings, for audio and video, and I do not understand enough about compression to know which ones I should be changing.

One thing I did was check back through the avi files which seem to work, and they have two thing in common only.... the audio frequency is 48,000 khz and the formate is either mp3 or liba52.
