Hello,
I am technically competent in IT but I am new to video as such. I would appreciate any clarification, suggestions or comments to the following please.
What I want to do:
I am hoping to record a live event from a hotel in February 2009 and I want to broadcast live on the internet.
What I think is required:
1. I will be using a JVC Camcorder which will be connected to my laptop (Core 2 Duo 2ghz and 4gigs of Ram, Windows XP) with a firewire cable.
2. I am not clear whether the DV stream, while being recorded, will be directed to the firewire port in realtime (without going to tape first) and will just be a raw data source at a location on my E:\ drive constantly increasing in size as time goes by?
3. I persume I can use VLC to capture this streamed data from my E:\ drive and apply whatever transcodings, encodings etc are applicable and stream/pipe to a website?
4. While streaming/piping to this website what would be the simplest/commonest format to use for users to view the live stream? Preferably for users not having to download media players?
Again I would appreciate any/all clarification on the above procedure or recommended alternative procedure.

Instead of making your own streaming "server" you can use an online live streaming site like http://bambuser.com/ . It works on computers with a webcam or dv camera (see http://bambuser.com/start/webcam ).

I have tried it with a phone and it worked pretty well.
