how would i capture bits and pieces off a stream (wmv)? i know how to capture the full stream, but its too big.. 2hrs, i just want to skim to the part and capture the 2 min clip i need. is this posisble? what software can achieve this? thanks!

You could use a screen recorder, like camtasia studio . Camstudio is a free version, but it might not work as well or have as many options

With camtasia studio, you can change the recording options. E.g. the default is 15fps so that might be choppy.
Also if your PC is old/ too slow, it might drop frames during recording
