    Does the AVCHD standard allow for thumbnails, so that when a disc is authored and then inserted into, say a PS3, it will show a thumbnail like a BluRay does?

    It depends on the authoring program. Corel DVD MovieFactory 7 Pro, Cyberlink PowerProducer / PowerDirector and Nero Vision 10, which I use, do, perhaps others as well.
