  1. I recently got a 50" phillips magnavox rear projection tv. it works just fine but the picture is off center by about 2 inches or so and it's a lil fuzzy. i think all it needs is realigned and the color tubes or whatever they are dusted off. i was wondering if any1 knows how to do this? i got it for free off craigslist so i realy dont wanna be putting alot of $ into it by hiring a pro. if it's possible someone could just walk me through it i'd probably be able to, im pretty good at things like this, i dont wanna completely screw it up though. anyways the model # is 9P5511C102 and the serial is 51478744 thanks for any and all responses!

If this is an older set, then it probably has 3 CRTs inside - each tube has at least 30,000 volts DC, and the tubes retain voltage even if the set is off and unplugged. If you do not have any experience working inside TV sets, then I would NOT recommend that you attempt it.

The CRTs act as capacitors - very powerful capacitors!

The reason the picture is fuzzy is because the fluid between the 3 crts and lenses gets cloudy. The fluid must be replaced and realigned... not an easy job.

I would put back on cragslist.

You might consider purchasing a Sams Photofact for the TV. It would detail all repairs and adjustments. They are not cheap, but are very comprehensive. http://www.samswebsite.com/photofact/pf_search.asp If you don't find anything there, you may have to contact them as there are variations in models and brand names.

If that fails, do a internet search for the model and brand and see what comes up.

If Number Six is correct in what he says (I would think he is, but I have no personal knowledge to confirm it), you need to understand that you could possibly kill yourself by working inside the TV and touching the wrong thing.
My suggestion would be to pay for a pro to do it. Did you not consider that maybe this was free because the work isn't going to be cheap and the original owner didn't want to pay for it? If you were really "pretty good at things like this" you would NOT have to ask us for advice. If you need advice, you don't need to do this yourself.

smokers are a rear projections worst enemy. I acquired my parents old sony 46. I took the back panel off to get to the mirror and it was covered in smoke film. cleaning this did help but I did not know about the fluid getting cloudy (thanks megahurts!). the set still works fine, just a fuzzy picture.

  7. JMAN98, i didn't say i was good at fixing tv's i said "things like this" so mr rudeman98 if you dont have anythign nice/helpful to say dont freakin say it huh?. yes i did consider this when it was given to me, it works fine and it's just a lil fuzzy, it's just for my 5 yr old anyways and what's wrong with wanting to make something better? it's not like "if i dont fix it it wont work" scenario jesus. it's just that hell if it can be fixed why not fix it? and as for asking for advice,, why are you here again? as for everyone else i definately appreciate your feedback (since this was just a passing though to 'make it better even though it DOESNT HAVE TO BE' type of project) and for everyone else again except mrrudeman98 thanks for actually replying and advising WITHOUT being so critical. cuz i guess he THINKS he came out of the womb with a tv repair mans certificate and probably everything else being here's here to ADVICE and not ASK for it.. i bet if we did a search under his name we'd find ALOT of ?'s. what do you all think? idiot stay off this forum ify ou just wanna critisize! THANKS EVERYONE ELSE!
