    Hi There,

I am hoping someone can help me as I am tearing my hair and have wasted a few discs thinking I may be doing something incorrectly.

I have heard that you can burn AVI Files as a data disc to save encoding them provided your dvd player is DivX certified then you can access them as file names on your standalone DVD player then play them.

I have a Panasonic DMR-EH65 250gb dvd recorder which is Divx certified. I have been trying to use several programmes such as Nero and Imgburn to burn the files as a data disc but when I do this and place them in the Panasonic DVD player I either get an unsupported format message or I get the disc to access then it states it is not recognized ( no unspported file format comes up) On reading my DVD recorder manual it shows lovely pictures of selecting a divx/avi file from a menu but I cant even get that. I had two occassions where no unspported format came up on the dvd player it just accessed then done nothing, no message on the screen or LCD panel at front of recorder...nothing. The little disc icon came up on the screen on the player which I think is a good thing but I got no menu or it did no play

Can someone please help...have I missed something or is it the DVD recorder that can play it even though it say it can??

    Hear from someone soon.

Thanks very much for your time.

I do this with Imgburn all the time with no problems. Start Imgburn, select Write Files/Folders to Disc. Click on the find file icon, and select your AVI files. Click the big Burn button and let Imgburn do it's thang. Test the finished disc in your player.

    Caveats :

Use good quality discs, not the cheap crap you find in the corner store/service station etc

Not all AVI files, including those encoded with Divx/Xvid will play. There are restrictions on how the file must be encoded for it to play back correctly.

I suggest you buy yourself a DVD RW until you get the burning sorted so you don't waste discs.

Actually, select Mode/Build, not Write ("Write" is for burning disc images, like ISOs).

  6. In Nero Burning ROM choose the "DVD-ROM (ISO)" setting. Don't use multisession. Finalize the disc.

Some players may require "DVD-ROM (UDF)" instead.

Be sure you files are Divx/Xvid (AVI can use any codec, most of which will not work on Divx/DVD players). Other general Divx/DVD player issues:

You can get a Divx test CD to verify your players compatibility from here:

    "The front the menu"?
Okay, that's the "Ez Mode Picker", a new interface.
Is it the default now? I never use it myself.

Anyway, that overloads the word "write" with two different functions. That seems a poor design choice.
Notice the tool tip that comes up is still "Build (Device)".
However you get there, make sure you're in "Build" mode.
