  1. DIVX/AVI format doesn't seem to be a standard on most dvd/blu-ray player as of right now however I would really like to start burning these avi files on data disc.

Would it be safer to just continue burning dvd video or should I switch to data mode now ?

I would say that divx avi is pretty much standard on all dvd players today. But maybe not on blu-ray players yet.

If you hand out discs to others, then people with non-DivX set top DVD players will complain. You can't expect people to buy a special player to meet your non-standard specs.
If it is just for your own household, then 'standard' doesn't apply, as long as you keep a DivX-capable player around.

I'd burn as data discs. Conversion to DVD will just be conversion to another lossy format and quality could go down, depending on how you do it. More and more players do support Divx, so that's in your favor. I suppose there will always be some players that won't support it, but it's easy enough to find players that do support it.

Here's a link to a sticky we have on some options that might be problems for Divx playback on standalone players.

In general you should avoid these options unless you have tested them and are sure that they are OK for your playback device.
