I recently moved some of my videos to my other computer, and only some of them play correctly. Some of the others give me this message in WMP "Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file."

huh? well, i know i have the codec for the avi file, because i have other files that are similar and have the same codec and they play fine. So, are these AVI's broken? Is there anyway I can fix it? I tried "Digital Video Repair", but it said the file was not supported.

If anyone could help me or give me some ideas, that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

  2. Use MediaInfo or GSpot to verify the container and codecs.

ok..well i tried Media Info, and it couldn't find a codec at all. It just showed the file size of 256MB and where it was located. So does this mean it can't be fixed?

Media Info supplies a lot more data than that.

It did show a lot more info for my other files. But with this file, and for a few others, that's all that was displayed.

  8. Perhaps those are damaged.

Try gspot as suggested earlier, or try playing with VLC (which can often play damaged files)

Try opening it in g-spot and see if it gives a file truncated message in the details. It sounds like the file is either not really there, or very badly screwed.

  10. If that's all it says I suspect the file is hosed.

ok, I tried gspot and it still didn't show any more information. It just said 'Unknown'. I got these files from the internet. I just didn't want to re-download them all. I guess they didn't copy to my computer correctly. oh well, thanks anyways
