Yup, you read that title correctly. I want to know why I'm still able to perfectly fine play back ANY media file on my system when I've spent the last couple of hours trying to uninstall anything even remotely codec related. There should be no codecs left on my system yet for some reason I can still play AVI, MKV, OGM, DIVEX, FLV etc, etc. Anything goes.

I'm on Vista x86 ultimate, using mplayer classic to play back files.

Some media players have their own internal codecs and do not rely upon codecs that are installed into the system.

Should have been more specific. I'm using "Media Player Classic Homecinema". http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=170561

As far as I know it does not contain any codecs, but I could be wrong. I'm gonna look into that.

The reason I'm trying to remove codecs is that there was a problem where ffdshow would not be used for playback which resulted in me not being able to use any advanced features.

mpc homecinema has also builtin codecs/filters. See under View->Options->Internal Filters.

Aha, and I bet it was overriding my other codecs when they were installed which is why I was unable to get the features I was messing with to work. This probably solved the whole problem. thx
