How Do You Identify Whether The CD You Bought On Ebay Is An Original Copy?

  2. Does it have permanent marker writing on it?

If so, then you have a copy.

Does it look like a sticky paper label, was put on the disc?

If so, then you have a copy?

  3. Do you have a "burned" CD and a "commercial" CD?? Look at the underside and you'll notice the difference quite easily...

I'd like to know what "an original copy" is. It's either the "original" or a "copy". Or did you supposedly buy a "master"? If you are asking if you bought an authorized or unauthorized copy, then more information about your purchase is required. Was this a commercially available CD of a well known band, or a limited edition demo CD of a local artist? Many of the latter are burned as opposed to pressed and often have paper and/or handwritten labels. What is your real concern here?

The easiest way to tell if you got a bootleg is if you look on the bottom and the disc is purple. If it is a pressed disc then its a lot harder. Unless its really obvious like misspellings on the label or there is no label the only real way to tell is by comparing it to an original disc.

I know they have pressed bootlegs of DVD's complete with nice box and cover art. the whole deal..., is it the same for CD's?

  8. A pressed CD is almost a perfect chrome/silver color.
A burnt CD has a slight tinge of color to it... In a lot of cases that slight color will be a faint green

Adding to what coalman said, there are pirate/bootleg pressed CDs. Most of the ones that i have seen have custom covers silk screened on them (though they look just as authentic as the retail ones).

Real pirates aren't joe p2p, sharing files. They have their own warehouse and disc presses, not some 14-year-old manually burning Memorex discs and labeling with a Sharpie.
