First of all im a newbie with computers. I got this computer this year from a friend. it was reformatted before given to me. I installed a nero burning rom he gave me version 6.6 something which works on my old computer I chekced.

This computer has a cdrw dvdrw but it seems to read nothing. if I place a cd in it that it is music, or files or even a blank one nothings happens it just keeps running and then after a while I get a message(for example in nero) saying there is no cd in drive.

Either with nero or without it doesnt read nothing.

dont ask me how but I managed to check weither the computer was reading the cdrom and it does it told me all the drivers are up to date and its functionnal.

Help...ive been trying to fix this for 6 months now. getting pretty annoyed. did reformat 2 months ago hoping it would solve the problems and reinstalled nero but no luck.

Any suggestion swith tep by step woud be greatly appreciated.
    BTW I run Xp

I agree with RabidDog. Burners do wear out, usually sooner than you'd like.
It's certainly possible based on your post that it's time to get a new drive. Note that Nero will most likely NOT recognize the new drive, so if you replace the drive with a different model, you may need to uninstall and then re-install Nero for it to work with the drive. You can also try using the free ImgBurn program which will recognize the new drive without a reinstall.

Crippled versions of Nero were handed out with cd-burners that would only work with the model of burner it was supplied with. If the version your friend gave you is one of those, you'll never get it to work. Fortunately, as jman98 suggested there is the superior burning program, imgburn, which also happens to be free.

Also, check Ahead's site for updates - they might have added support for the drive in a later Nero 6 update, if any. But that's a very big 'maybe.'

Definitely, try Imgburn first and see if it recognizes the drive.

Very well Im going to try Imgburn and will later let u know the result this week.

BTW Nero does recognize the drive it shows up on the lits. I did retry with the older version of nero that it came with and its the same problem. That is why I installed the nero my friend gave me because it was working for him before the reformating .

    hope those info helps!

I would go to Device Manager and uninstall the drive, than restart windows and let it find and install it again. If that does not work it may be time for new one.
