I am trying to compress an MPEG video file in VirtualDub. For the audio, I select full processing mode and then choose the Fraunhofer IIS Codec, but the selectable bitrates only go up to 56 kb/s. I click the "Show All Formats" checkbox, and this does open up more bitrates, but all of them are still less than 56 kb/s. I was under the impression the Fraunhofer codec could do higher bitrates. Am I mistaken? If so, what audio codec should I be using? Thanks a lot.

windows has packed original mp3 codecs made by frunhofer. they suppoert only upto 56kbps.
go to www.audioactive.com & dload the audioactive encoder in dload pages. its 30 day trial version.
alternativley u shud try for lame encoder, which the best encoder according to various tests. (better than original frounhofer codecs).
just do a search. -
Install the Lame 3.91 encoder (comes as a .dll extension) from the following website:

Hope this helps you out!
