  1. Hi,

Just recently, I started to have noises coming out of my speakers and subwoofer that weren't there when I purchased the set about 3 months ago. I don't play my mp3's or videos loudly so I don't think that they're damaged but I don't know why these noises started and I don't know how to get rid of them.

I have an ASUS A8V-VM SE Socket 939 Micro ATX Motherboard - UDMA133, SATA, and RealTek is on the software disk that came with the motherboard. For the Master Volume Audio Output Control, I have the settings for Master Volume, Wave, SW Synth, Front, Rear, Subwoofer, CD Volume and Line Volume all set at Medium. RealTek also has an Audio Manager. I have the Sound Effect set in a V shape from Bass to Treble. I have the Mixer Control for Subwoofer, Center, CD Volume, Line Volume and PC Beep all set to Medium.

When I play mp3's there are no problems with the speakers or subwoofer.

The problems occur when I watch a video/movie. I have a VGA MSI NX8400GS-TD256EH 8400GS RT video card.
The problem that I'm having with my speakers is that they "thump-snap" and "crackle" periodically when I'm doing nothing, such as when reading an email. The subwoofer now has a constant rumbling sound when I watch a video. The subwoofer makes the rumbling sound even when I open a folder.

I use K-Lite Standard codec pack (always have). I left the ffdshow audio and video configurations at their default (as always).

I don't know which settings take precedence over the other . . . RealTek Master Volume Audio Output Control vs RealTek Audio Manager vs ffdshow?

What I'd like to know is if the speaker and subwoofer are damaged or if some settings are off. I watch a lot of videos but, as I said, not loudly, just medium, never blasting.

Does anyone have any ideas about what might have caused these noises to start and/or how to fix them?

K-lite is among the 'Usual Suspects' when it is installed and there are problems.

But I would un-install the Realtek audio driver, then re-install the latest version for your motherboard. That may clear out the problems. I would un-install K-lite also. And un-install ffdshow and just re-install it and see how it goes. ffdshow should supply most of your needed audio and video codecs and it's unlikely to cause problems like a codec pack. If you really must use K-lite, only install the codecs you really need from it that ffdshow doesn't supply and you will have a lot less problems than just throwing in all the K-lite codecs and hoping it will work.

You can test your speakers on another computer, but I suspect they are fine. If they all shared a common power supply, then that could be the problem, but I would suspect a driver issue first, a codec issue second and a power supply issue last.

If AC3Filter was installed with the codec pack, this may be the cause of your audio problems

Good piece of software, but causes me grief until I uninstall it again and my audio goes back to 'normal'

  4. When using a V shaped equalizer setting be sure that the ends of the V do not go too much above the zero dB line. Ie, move the center of the V down, not the edges of the V up.

    Do this:

    not this:

The latter will cause distortion when there is strong bass in the source.

  5. Hi . . . thanks for all of your suggestions and they helped )

I uninstalled K-Lite Standard but I need the codecs for dvdsanta so I re-installed it. When I have just DivX, DVDx and DvdX X64, dvdsanta doesn't work. I have Nero 8 but I can't get it to install. It keeps telling me to uninstall Nero 7 first but it won't uninstall. Other DVD burning programs (from avi to DVD) haven't worked either for one reason or another via error messages.

Next, I set my equalizer at the recommended V shape. I didn't have them all the way up but I lowered them as shown.

AC3 filter came with GordianKnot and I'm assuming that GordianKnot won't work without it so I didn't uninstall it.

The speakers and subwoofer are a set and they have one power source. The speakers plug into the back of the subwoofer.

I turned off my computer, unplugged the cable from the port, plugged it back in and rebooted and the sound is back to normal now. It has awsome sound!

Thanks again. Your help is very much appreciated ))

To uninstall Nero 7 completely, you need to use Nero Clean Tool. http://www.nero.com/eng/support-nero7-tools-utilities.html

But, glad you got the sound working.

because DVD Santa is rubbish, and you are too lazy to work out what is really needed.

  11. I'm too lazy? Lazy. That word has never been synonimous with who I am. Do you want to know who I think are lazy? The people who write instructions/guides. The screenshots almost never match the picture on my screen and those people always seem to forget to mention an important detail or two while they're at it. I built my computer. Nowhere in the directions did it mention that risers needed to go under the motherboard. Prior to building my computer, I surfed the net and copied and pasted instructions on building a generic computer onto a Microsoft Word Doc, and those instructions didn't mention risers either. That cost me hundreds of dollars. I went from knowing almost nothing about computers, drivers, BIOS, settings and software to knowing a lot about it in the past 1.5 years, and I'm smart enough and ambitious enough to look for help when I need it.

I didn't come here to be insulted but for help.
