    i have a AOpen DUW1616/ARR and it doesnt want to read DVD type disks. it reads CDs fine.
    any suggestions?

  2. Perhaps the lens needs cleaning

    or a symptom of a dying dvd burner

    good news is . DVD burners are cheap . less than $30 for a new one

    i sure hope it isnt dying. its barely been used. i got it a few years ago but i didnt use it till receantly...it kinda stopped working after the power went out, could it have fryed itself?

  4. I'm not sure if this will help.
    try under Device Manger to uninstall,and install the driver again.
    reads CDs fine,and not DVD's sound like dvd optical is bad

    wait for more responds from other forum members.

    Definitely try the remove/reinstall drivers attempt first; you might get lucky. Check to see if it can mount data DVD discs -- if it can, but only refuses to recognize DVDs, then something besides hardware is going on. If no DVD ever gets recognized, then things look grimmer. Some drives use two separate lasers (an IR one for CD, a red one for DVD; this maximizes compatibility with different media and brands), and if the red one goes bad, you get precisely the symptom you are describing. If that turns out to be the case, replacement is your only option. Luckily, as has been pointed out, new ones are not that expensive.
