  1. A pretty newb question, but I have my pc connected to my tv and I have a bunch of movies ripped to xvid on my pc. Is there anyway to emulate the effects of an upconverting dvd player using my pc? If not, can I buy an upconverting dvd player, output from my pc through it so it sharpens the image?

    Thanks

You can try turning on some of the filters in the playback software and/or codec, but the effect will be limited. No, you cannot pipe your files from your PC through an unconverting player to your TV. You would have to burn them to disc and play them back.

In my experience, upconverting players only produce good results form good source, and most Xvid files are not good source. They look OK on an SD TV, but on HD, even through an upscaling player, they look like what they are - over compressed Xvid files. If these are standard 700 MB downloaded Xvids then you are trying to polish a turd, which usually just results in you getting S**t on your hands.

  3. I see what you're saying, but these were all personally ripped by me at pretty high bitrates. That being said, do upconverting dvd players do that much, even for dvds?

Some do, some don't. Cheap ones do very little. You might want to have a read of these

However, even a good upconverter can't do much with poor source.
