How can I take a short clip (about 2 minutes) from a homemade DVD and

    a. send it by email
    b. upload it to video sharing sites like You Tube?

What is the best format (mpeg, flash, wmv, etc) for this and how does one go about doing this?

    Thanks in advance.

rip with dvd shrink. Convert with super or any other program like virtualdubmpeg2 to divx, xvid, wmv or any codec you want.

the format depends on the file size restriction you have and the codecs the receiving person has - of course you can ask the receiving person to use vlc or mediaplayerclassic which have their own codecs.

  3. For a completely automatic way, use Windows Movie Maker. Just drop the clip on the timeline, and choose Publish to email. It will automatically convert it to a size that you can email.

Of course that limits it to wmv for output. Or dv-avi. But it can be reencoded to another format, keep in mind quality loss upon conversion.

AVI Demux looks like it will work, too. It can open VOB files directly (no need to rip to your hard drive first) and will even ask you if you want to join the VOBs into one. Seems to have quite a few output formats and options too.
