    Greetings.

I have large MP4 files which I need to edit before archiving to DVD. I have the Womble MPEG2VCR and also the Womble Video Editor but they dont seem to to work for MP4.

    Any advice?

    Regards.

What kind of MP4? That's just a generic container name and says little about the actual codecs used. But try VirtualDub. It works with most AVI type formats. You can also tell what codec your file is using with Gspot or MediaInfo.

Most highly compressed formats, MP4 variants included, are difficult to edit. Xvid, for example, has a keyframe spacing of 300 frames by default. This makes frame accurate editing very difficult unless you want to re-encode the whole file and have the quality loss. The newest VD can let you cut almost anywhere in the video, then will just re-encode at the cut points. Look for 'Smart Rendering'.

Generally, you want to avoid editing with highly compressed formats. Better to edit the video in the native format, then encode to the final format for viewing.

I use MeGUI AVISynth script creator. Open the MP4 with it to create an AVS file, then import the AVS into Adobe Premier for some editing. You need to install PremierAVSplugin first though.

It supports .mp4 container natively, as well as many codecs including XviD, x264 and many others
