I have been trying recently to convert a mkv to avi (I have my own reasons, no need to mention that mkvs are much better than avis. Sorry if I come across as offensive, no offense intended). The softsubbed subitles have a couple of font attachments. Just wondering if there is a program that could convert mkv to avi while retaining the subtitles fonts (WinAVI was great but didn't work for me as it crashes with the xvid codec).

    Thanx for all input

  2. xvid4psp

read my post just next to yours. u can extract the subtitles with mkvextractgui. The u can hardsub the mkv files, converting them to avi with xvid4psp.

Yill now i did 26 mkv and 8 ogm without sny problem. having problems with some mkv cos of audio tracks that give svid4psp some problems so it gives me an error.

Anyyway 8-15 minutes to convert a mkv softsubbed file to an hardsubbed avi. mantaining all fonts

Firstly, Thanx a lot!!! Secondly, question - Can u choose the audio streams with this? (There is one audio stream on the mkv file that is unnecessary and a waste of space)

Extract the audio with mkvextract and use the audio stream you want to import in XviD4PSP...

  5. You can remove the unwanted audio stream by using mkvmergegui before converting. Just checkmark the stuff you want, uncheck the stuff you don't want.

  7. like i otld you i had some problems with some mkv files (the audio keep giving roblems on xvid4psp)

so i tried AlltoAVI. Is as fast as Xvid4psp and manage to encode even the files that gave me problem. With each encoding u can set the audio track you want from the file. The subtitles must be extracted with mkvextractgui as usual, renamed as the mkv file and put in the same folder.

One BIG advantage this program has is that you can set a list of jobs. Like encode a folder with 10 or + files and leave it to do its work

But the main problem is that the hardsubbed subtitles aren't the same font as appeared in the mkv. Thats what I'm trying to achieve in the first place. The encoding was never the issue. The subtitle fonts were. Alltoavi is nice for encoding but the font is impossible to manage. So...

  9. mmm didnt think about that when i posted the alltoavi thing

keep using Xvid4psp cos it keeps the subtitles font since u hardsub the ass file.

the srt files have no special fonts (as far as i know), so if you have files with subtitles in srt form, alltoavi is the best choice
