I have a video that's WMVA - WMP v10 (VC-1 Beta). I found a WMF11 redistributed codec pack, but it still wants SP2 to install. I don't see why I should be required to update or verify my bloody windows installation or WMP to decode a particular type of video. that's bullshit. Is there a workaround?

Try to extract the install exe. WinRar or 7-zip will do this.
You then see what you need.

been there, done that. I got the update.exe to run by changing a line in the INF (MinNtServicePackVersion=), but then it just bitches about "setup could not verify the integrity of update.inf Make sure the Cryptographic service is running" Obviously, it's running and doesn't like the edited INF. and the DLLs etc are useless unless you can get winblows to actually register them.

  6. Then install SP2, why are you afraid to secure your system against Malware?

because I prefer not to be forced into updating shit that's not giving me a problem in the first place. I don't want that bloatware, annoying, built in firewall, p2p unfriendly garbage. I prefer to run SP1 and use firewall software of my choosing rather than hacking the TCPIP.sys(?) to fix the number of connections shit, etc. Why are people afraid to find workarounds to updating all this damn mircrosoft software? Here's what fixed my problem, finally. http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/mediaplayercodec.html

The updates have more to do with than simple firewall updates. Many of the things patched are very specific exploits that a firewall or anti-virus or other malware program will not be able to prevent. You can have the most secure sytem on the planet but it only requires one back door and your security is compromised. For example there was a exploit in the original XP before SP1 where you only had to be connected to the internet and you'd get hacked. you didn't even have to have a browser window open.

FYI the MS firewall can be turned off, you don't need to run it.

Regarding security, even the 2nd service pack will NOT make your OS
secure enough. Worms and rootkits created after Windows XP's SP2
may infect your computer if you still haven't installed these or those "hotfixes"
    (read: half-assed patches).
