Can anyone kindly suggest recommended settings or point me in the direction of a guide that does for Cinema Craft Encoder SP2? I like HCEnc very much but I wanted to compare it with this one since it is praised so highly and the speed is apparently faster. But, there are a ton of options and parameters. All I want to do is convert normally an .avi to DVD w/chapters and best bitrate.

    Thanks

All you need do is go to the "Tools", or "All guides" section of this site, enter Cinema Craft Encoder, click on it and underneath there will be a bunch of guides you can click on to.

As for converting an .avi, it depends what's in the .avi file in the first place. However, a simple AviSynth script pointing to this file, fed into CCE should work fine. If you're resizing, I recommend a Lanczos filter.

There are indeed lots of options, and many are subjective. But you need to note two things for what you want:

Enable "for DvD" in the Video settings upper right quadrant to ensure DvD compliancy.

Near the bottom right, there's a "Chapters" button. Once you're in that menu it should be quite easy to point out chapter points. Try a test file to practice.

As for my options, I personally like "1-pass VBR" and a bit lower down in the interface I select Q=30, Min = 2000, Max = 9000 and I get great quality at decent file sizes in one pass. But that's me. You may want to select an exact bitrate. It's up to you.
I hate VHS. I always did.
