I'm an amateur videographer. I use a Sony MiniDV cam. I am looking for suggestions/advice as to what program I can use to edit/filter the audio portion of what I film. I am trying to reduce background noise. I don't even know where to start looking for a program to choose from.

    Thanks,
    Dawson

Hissy windy stuff is tough to remove from a recording. Audacity or Wavosaur are good free apps.

Try Goldwave too. Load your audio into GW (or one of the apps Soopa mentioned), select a part of the audio with JUST the noise, copy it to the clipboard, then have the prg use that hunka noise on the clipboard to filter out said noise throughout the file.

Try this method! It uses Wavosaur, with the ReaFir plugin from Reaper.

To be honest I haven't tried out Audacity's noise reduction, although I believe it has been enhanced and become more sophisticated?

Adobe Audition's noise reduction is very very good.

OF COURSE IT ALL DEPENDS just exactly WHAT kind of noise...?

Audacity (newest beta version 1.35) has a pretty good noise reduction "effect" (as filters are called in Audacity).

You select a portion of noise in the recording and the program will train itself to look for that particular noise and get rid of it. It can get rid of hum, background noises, clicks, reduce clipping. etc...
