because using fat32 file system you are limited to 4gig file size, you can use virtual dub and use file spilling to fix this or you can go to win 2000 or win xp and eliminate the problem completely.

  5. i already have windows XP pro. does this mean i have to use vurtual dub now?

  6. As I understand it, it's not really the OS, it's the filesystem (how your harddrive is formatted). FAT32 has a limit of 4GB. NTFS (NT 4, Win2K, XP) does not have a file limit (well at least not one that I've hit). I'd assume that WinXP using a FAT32 formatted hard drive would still have a 4GB file limit. So check how the drive is formatted and convert to NTFS if needed.

  7. yes my harddrive is FAT32. i need to be NTSF. how would i go about making it NTSF? would i have to formatt my harddrive first?
    thanks

you can convert to ntfs without losing anything, just go to my computer, right click on the drive and go to properties. I think that is where you change it, if not it is under administration tools. Not sure since I converted on install of xp.

I understand your situation of trying to capture a very large video into your very massive 80GB hard drive. You want to override the FAT32 4GB limit. You tried to convert the FAT32 to NTFS with your Win XP command prompt. You are doing the right thing, it just won't work by converting.

I have checked out my WinXP Help and Support Center in my computer. I got the info by using search in the Help Center, like this, FAT32 to NTFS.

It doesn't look too good and this means a lot of work to change over to NTFS. The only way is to format the partition as NTFS instead of converting. It is recommended in the help guide to format the hard drive as NTFS rather than converting it from FAT32. This means you will lose everything in the computer when you format. Everything will be erased. Sorry about this.

If it is too much work, might be better to get another computer. If you have the money, a factory set WinXP computer as NTFS is recommended. Good luck.

I have found more info on the subject of 4gb limit with fat32

    Read this on : http://www.vcdhelp.com/mjpeg.htm#problems

How to overcome the problem with the limit of 4 GB AVIs on fat32 or if you want to use several harddrives
Use Virtualdubs Multisegment/spill system, read here how to use it.

This might help you to overcome this problem.

  13. as an alternative, you might opt for installing and running partition magic, resize / downsize your fat32 partition, and creating an additional ntfs partition...

  14. It is required to set the capture file in an available folder of your hard disk. Check that you have enough space in it.

    e.g.:
    File -> Set capture File -> c:\My videos\capture00.avi

  15. hi, well i think i will give up in virtualdub b/c i got it to go over to NTFS. but now i can only capture 13G. is there anyway to go further then that?

    thanks

  16. Use Huffyuv (lossless) compression instead of uncompressed. That should give you your hour's worth. Also, you might consider capturing at 640x480. It's still high res and will look great.

  17. When you install Windows XP it will let you select the type of partition you want! Mine saved ALL my files from my fat32 partition and put it on my NTFS, so i would try that!

  18. iam using the Huffyuv. but why did you put lossless in ( )? is there two different kinds? i also am captureing in 640x480.
    thanks

  19. No, that was just there because some people gripe because they hear the word "compression" and imme4diately think "lossy".

  21. Well, I capture using MJPEG at Q19. A thirty minute show is only about 3 gig. I was thinking that a huffy compressed hour long show shouldn't be that much bigger than two times my file sizes - certainly no more than three times. But I was just guessing. It sounded like you may have been capturing uncompressed.

  22. i just tryed MJPEG but i lose way too many frames. and it won't let me set the quality. but i think i know what i was doing to cause to only capture so much is i had the set capture to 27 mins. haaaaaa silly me. ill get back to you and tell you if it changed anything
    thanks

  25. I have 2 hard drives. Bootup drive with all my programs (20gig,Windows XP) and a second faster drive that I purchased mostly for video(40gig). I have recently come across the 4 gig problem and found this thread was very helpful. Both my drives are fat32. Can I have my bootup drive fat32 and my video drive NTFS? Will they recognize each other? Will my laptop on my network (Windows 98, too slow to upgrade to XP) still share files with both drives? Can I partition 30 gigs of my video drive as NTFS? I have heard mention of using a certain part of a hard drive for video as it reads faster than other parts, how do I designate file to be saved on the fast part?
    Enough questions for now.
    Thanks for any help.
