I've tried joining files with Yamb, but the audio goes out of sync. Is there any other application, preferably free, that can be used? Thanks.

They have to be the same specifications (i.e. dimensions, frame rate, codec). Use mediainfo if you don't know the specs. Otherwise you have to convert them to the same specs.
You can also join files with avidemux using "append" (if the criteria above still hold true)
"MPEG-4" means about 20 different things, including AAC audio, .mp4 container , h.264 video, DivX, XviD...so you might want to clarify what you mean. -
trying to do the same
i got the movie "It", which is a double sided movie. I'm gonna convert side1.mp4 and side2.mp4
will have to do lords of the ring also. Disc1.mp4, disc2.mp4, disc3.mp4.
Settings will be aac with h.264 video, same average bitrate.
What's the simplest program to join these files? avidemux? Yamb?
The joiner doesn't need to encode anything, simpy join. -
It's usually not as simple as just joining. It it was there would be a hundred programs that do it well, instead of the hundred programs that currently do it very poorly.
If you are joining DVDs, I would do the joining first, then encode. I would use Avisynth to bring it all together, then feed the script to the encoder to get a single file. Far less risk of sync issues and other problems associated with joining.Read my blog here.

just found out that dvdshrink can do that, http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/mpg/dvdshrink31-multidisc.htm
join the dvds and after, i can encode
seems to be my best bet -
okay, i've been screwed
the dvd is join and work, problem is when i gotta encode he movie he gives methe title choice, so it did a part of what i wanted.
I want to join the title...
Edit: found something, will try https://forum.videohelp.com/topic328390.html -
you can join all the vobs into one huge mpeg-2 if you want. it's a bit of work. what you need to do is get rid of everything but the vobs in the folder, then rename all the vobs consecutively. then use vob2mpg to join them all together into an mpg. then use restream to re-write the gop timestamps. that should give you one file you can encode to anything you want.
