Does Sony Vegas Pro 8 make full use of an Intel Quadcore CPU? I'm planning a system update later in the year and I'm looking and options.

I have Vegas Pro 8 and I'm considering a system upgrade later in the year. I am using a 3.2 Prescott and I need more processing power. I'm trying to gauge the benefit of going Quadcore versus Dualcore. I would love to be able to download a trial Quadcore system - right out of Startrek.

Yes it does - most of the time. Certain formats that you render to do not fully utilize 100% of the CPU. Overall, I would recommend the upgrade.

Here is an interesting report from EventDV magazine. The report says that measured test results with Vegas Pro 8 and Adobe Premiere CS3 shows four core processors are faster than dual core but that's where the mulitcore benefit ends. There is no benefit with eight core processors. I imagine than future versions of Vegas and Premiere may be designed to take advantage of more than four cores.

It's very odd that the number of cores supported should be hard-coded. My code will detect the number of cores available and assign one thread to each for parallel processing. Of course, I haven't been able to test this on a dual quadcore but the thread allocation is so trivial.... Should it be a problem, though, the maximum number of threads can be specified.

For really huge projects, Vegas Pro 8's networked rendering lets you farm out part of a rendering project to multiple computers. -
Considering a Q6600 is only $20 more than an E8400, the choice should be clear.
