Just wondered if anyone has used one of the machines , they are often combos, which can upconvert vhs and recorded that onto dvd.
Does it improve things over using standard vhs output.

Do you mean a DVR (Digital Video Recorder) or a converter box that uses a USB connectior or similar?
If you are asking if they improve the quality of a VHS recording, no. Some may have filtering that cleans up some noise. Or you can use a TBC (Time Base Corrector) to stabalize the video stream. Those are usually a stand alone device or built into some VCRs.
