I have a set of avi files that I downloaded that were originally in dvd format. The person I got these vids from ripped the files to an uncompressed format and compressed them into divx-avi format using virtualdub. Here is the summary of the all of the movies I have (12 in all):
Image
624x352
Audio
00:42:49 to 00:43:47 in length
120kbps to 133kbps bit rate
MP3 Format
Video
23fps
1116kbps Data Rate
12 bit Video Sample Rate
DivX Format
360,942KB to 357,724KB in size
One more thing: There were 4 movies on each disk (3 disks).
The problem is, when using Nero Vision I cant seem to get more than 1 video on a dvd without losing any quality. If I put 4 of the movies on one dvd and I tell Nero to make the movies to fit to the DVD, it says that the quality would be "bad". It just doesnt make sense that I cant just take the movies that this guy compressed to less than HALF of its original size, then put at LEAST 3 of these movies onto one 4.7gig DVD-R! I know there is an explanation for this... and I cant wait to hear it lol. Also, if there is a way to fix my problem so I can fit at least 3 of these movies onto DVD without losing any quality I would REALLY appreciate it. I have VirtualDub, Magic Video Converter, Nero 8, and the full DivX codec 6.8.0. Thanks.

You can't compare divx file sizes with dvd-video file sizes because DVD-video requires much higher file size(=video bitrate) to achieve same video quality.
You will lose quality whatever method you use but I would try FAVC or ConvertXtoDVD and maybe use a lower video resolution like 352x480/576. -
You can fit one hour of video on a DVD at best quality. Two hours at good quality. From there it goes downhill fast.
The size of the Divx/Xvid file is irrelevant. Only the running time and the quality of the file has any bearing. Nero (For once,
) is correct.
You can get more video on a DVD by using 1/2 D1 format. See 'WHAT IS' DVD to the upper left for the DVD format, specification and structure.
But to make it easier, try FAVC with HC and 1/2 D1 format. No matter what you use, the quality will be worse than the Divx file.
EDIT: Or what Baldrick said. -
You might find that these had been ripped from dl media and not sl media, this is why nero complains, more a "play" length issue.
After all, 4 x 40mins is jamming 2.6h onto a sl, according to videohelps bitrate calculator, that should come in around 3159 for video with audio running at 224kbit/s, now thats pretty low. 3 x 40mins gets you 7395 video bitrate which is much better, again, according to the video bitrate calc.
Then you have to figure out any resizing issues.
Use avidemux for the project components conversion
Dvdshrink, incase project tips the 4.3gig limit for sl media
Either nero vision or imgburn to burn final output (if nero vision, change settings to ignore compliant files)
Considering that the clips scale and ar may need adjusting, there will always be lose in quality, simply because the current video scale is not supported under dvd format and format shifting, you either go up, or down, a good choice depends on which is closer to original clip width and height.
