I just impressed myself, so I thought I'd tell the world!
(704 x 576@ 25fps, ASUS V7700 cap card, Huffyuv, YUYV, Win98SE, PIII 1GHz, 7200RPM IBM disk, Intel Application accellerator, VDub 1.4.8, ASUS TUSC2-C M/B, S-video from 10 year old VHS-C tape in LP mode in Panasonic video camera....and YES audio synch timing adjustment WAS enabled)
I got rid of all the bottlenecks in my system some time ago, and I was quite impressed with 1 dropped frame in 2000, but there was obviously still some sort of audio issue.
Anyway, I read a post today that told someone else to increase the audio buffers, and that inspired me to start playing again. Until now I have had the number and size of audio buffers set to '0' (as advised somewhere else that I don't remember).
What I have come up with is:
Set number of audio buffers to 0 and
Set audio buffer size to 10x the number of the Hz that the Vdub status window tells you you are actually getting (somewhere near 410000).
When I increased the size to 500000 and I got some really good results, ...so I started testing other values. (VDub told my I was getting 44090.47 Hz)
My testing gave me the following:
Buffer size..........Number of frames to first drop
370000...............6200
around 440900....11700, 12900, 12900, 11900
470000...............7800
For some reason, I didn't write down what I got at 441000, but it was definately better when I 'tuned' the value.
So, to me, the value (relative to the rate...I guess it is the rate that my sound card is working at...but who knows) seems very significant.
I'd recommend starting with 441000, then seeing what rate Vdub comes back with at the first drop (ie when it's had time to settle down)
I hope this will help some others to get rid of some drops. It would be very good to here if others have similar results with the method, or if this is some sort of freak accident (too much Heineken maybe).
By the way, setting the number of buffers didn't seem to get me anywhere, but I'll probably play around with it some more. Maybe someone else will have something to say on that.

BTW did I mention I was overclocking too (I heard a rumour that should mess things up....guess not)
