I am using a Plextor PX-TV402U to convert VHS to my computer. Is this output still analog or is it DV? I cannot find anywhere that it will tell me. I am assuming it is still analog. I am considering upgrading to a canopus unit so the output is DV. I have a miniDV camcorder but I am using an AG-1980 vcr and it does not have AV output. The canopus unit will take s-video in and convert to DV. Any help would be great. Thanks!

Never used a plextor device but my understanding of how functionate this device is that it convert an analog source on the fly in mpeg 4/mpeg2 so there is a good chance that what this device output is all ditized. How do you connect the device to your pc i have no idea but probably via firewire.
If you pick a high enough bitrate (mpeg2) and use a good s-vhs player and a tape in good condition, you should get something decent at the end.
The advantage of this device is that it use no ressources on your computer, the inconvenient being that you don't get optimum results unlike with a card (acquiring the video uncompressed or compressed with huffyuv)
Also there is a good chance you will never have sync issues with this which is a good point.*** DIGITIZING VHS / ANALOG VIDEOS SINCE 2001**** GEAR: JVC HR-S7700MS, TOSHIBA V733EF AND MORE -
this plextor unit only has usb2, which makes me think that it is analog in and analog out. it has produced very good results so far, no complaints. but, i would like to see if converting the analog vhs tapes to dv would produce even better results.

i quote:
"The heart of the PX-TV402U is its multi-format encoder chip which converts video to the DivX®, MPEG-4, MPEG-2 and MPEG-1 formats as it is being recorded to the PC"
