I have tried using several different programs and methods (including mencoder) to convert WMV to AVI. When viewing the resulting AVI files and comparing side-by-side with the original WMV, I consistantly am getting video with poorer colors than the originals. Is there a way around this?

Poorer in what way? Are the colors shifted or are the color levels lower or higher? Are the black levels and the white levels changed so the video appears darker or lighter?

And what are you viewing them on for the comparison? WMP is not a good choice. Try VLC instead. Since it uses it's own codecs, it leaves out any influence from your installed codecs.

I was using vlc for a while making some wmv's for the net and noticed that wmp did a better job of displaying the same file
