I have been ready to purchase a PS3 for Blurays, but the only thing holding me up
is what size to buy. The 40GB unit comes with a movie and the 80 GB unit comes with a game.
I'd rather have the movie.
So after searching this site and finding nothing about the possibility of eventually replacing the original HD
with a larger one, I thought I would ask if it is possible? If so, is it much trouble to do and how big a disk
could you use?

Google ps3+hard+drive+upgrade
Check the other specs of the 40Gb unit before buying - I think it may have less USB connections:

I think the 80GB has a card reader .... you can easily upgrade the HD yourself

The HDD is irrelevant for movie playback.
