Hi,
I'm probably being spectacularly thick here but I'm using a utility (DVDsGUI801 [I think it's called that]) to convert my digital photos to a DVD format and copying the resultant audio/video folders and contents onto a DVD-RW disc. My PC can read and play the slideshow but my DVD player doesn't recognise it. Please advise what I am doing wrong or please point me toward a freeware utility that does this function.
Very many thanks for any help anyone can give.

DVD Slideshow GUI should have given you a Video_TS folder and possibly an Audio_TS folder. Use Imgburn and click on Mode->Build. Select the Video_TS folder, and it will know it is a DVD that you are burning and burn accordingly.

Are you looking for a slide show program? There's a few in 'Tools': https://www.videohelp.com/tools/sections/photo-dvd-vcd
MemoriesOnTV is popular, but it's not freeware.
For reading them, it could be a problem with the disc format, the DVD media you are using, or your set top player not recognizing it. And if you just copy the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders to a DVD as data, that may not work. You need to burn them with a proper program like ImgBurn in 'Build' mode.

In DVD slideshow GUI just export as .iso and in ImgBurn or Nero or whatever burning program you prefer just open that .iso file(image-file) and burn it.
Btw. if you export to .gfd and open that file up in Gui for dvdauthor (also free), you can make a very nice photo-dvd with menus(and burn with imgburn(free)). Check out the tutorial here: http://download.videohelp.com/tin2tin/GFDexport.html -
You copy the Video_TS and Audio_TS folder to DVD-RW, this way not correct. Because the use this way, the DVD disc is a data disc only not the DVD-Video disc, the lead in and lead out the player can't recognize it. You need use the Imgburn or other authoring software burn the folder to DVD-RW disc.
