I have a 5.22GB 1920x810 HD video file in H.264 format inside a .mkv container. The audio is 0x0000, 48000, 5:1 (I have no idea what that means but ffmpegx said the audio is that). I want to make the Hi-Def H.264 video inside a .mkv file into two playable dvds since the size is too big for one dvd. I was thinking of converting it into an avi container then using Mpegstreamclip to split it and burn it into two dvds. It would be better if I could make it into two playable dvds with simple dvd structure to play on regular dvd players too if possible.

I have tried using using MokgVm2DVD and ffmpegx to try to convert it to avi but no luck so far. I was going to try visualhub but I was thinking that even tho it might be able to fit into a single dvd but the quality might go down in order to compress it into 1 dvd. If anyone can suggest a mac program that can do what I am asking for, that would be great unless someone has a better way that can fit a 5.22 HD video into two playable dvds without loss of quality, without the need to convert to avi.

    Thanks for your time.

  2. I'm not a mac user but I just want to point out that standard DVD (NTSC) is 720x480, so there is no way that you can get your 1920x810 file to play on a regular standalone DVD player without resizing/re-encoding (and therefore losing quality).

If your end goal is a DVD compliant disk, you have to re-encode and author VOB's anyway. Maybe you want to restate what your goals are?

I see. So I do have to reencode/resize the video. Before, I was hoping to move the video and audio from the mkv container to the avi format since I have a DVD player that can play avi files without the need of the VOB. I didn't want to mess with the video file since it might lower the quality, so I thought it would be ok if I somehow changed the container. But it seems I have to re-encode/resize for it to work in NTSC.

Then my question is what is the most suitable mac application for converting the video file into a avi file that is compliant to NTSC? My DVD player should be able to play avi files, so this way I can have a larger file broken into two dvd if the size still exceed 4.7GB.

The problem is, you aren't going to be able to play that video without down converting it. There are only a few DVD standalones supposedly capable of playing HD quality files. Unless you own a Gowell or something similar what you want is not possible. Trust me, I'm LOOKING for the hardware that will do just what you are looking for. No, Gowell isn't answering the emails I sent them.
