Thanks for the logs. They were helpful. You're not going to like this, but the problem is your media. You are using CMC made DVD-R discs according to the log. These are just awful. One of my friends uses them and they are horrible. They have bad areas all over them. He asks me to make copies for my brother of what he sends me (old TV stuff not on DVD or VHS) and I have a major nightmare every time with these discs. All kinds of read errors and such. Buy better media. Around here we recommend Taiyo Yuden (you'll have to mail order from http://www.rima.com, SuperMediaStore, NewEgg, etc.) or Verbatim. Throw those discs you have in the trash and if you use better media, your burns should magically start working.

    You're using crappy dvd media w/media ID> CMC .

    Disc Manufacturer ID: <CMC MA> <G. AM3>

Use better dvd media like VERBATIM or TAIYO YUDEN. Make sure you're using a 80 wire ide cable for your SAMSUNG S203N drive.

Only some Sony discs are good. I think I have read a few posts indicating that packages labled "Made In Japan" are actually Taiyo Yuden, and those are fine, but I have never found any.

Verbatim is what I use. If you are in the USA, either Office Max or Best Buy usually have sales on Verbatim media every few weeks.

Yup, you're SAMSUNG S203N is a SATA dvd burner. You can try changing the sata cable to see if that helps. But the CMC media id discs you're using is crappy. Buy some VERBATIM dvd media and burn it in your drive. If it fails as well then perhaps your drive is dying a slow death. Make sure you're not surfing the internet while burning and turn off other programs running in the background as well.

You might try to reduce the burn speed. On junk media this sometimes works.
    try 8x or 6x.

CMC arenīt that bad for me. I use them a lot, to back up cheaply PS2 games and Videos. Maybe 1 or 2 coasters out of a 100 pack. Different Brands, mostly Imation. But burning at half speed needed.
Only for Clients we use verbatim.

And as you said, you burned 80 DVDs without a problem: Media isnīt the only problem.

    So youīre problem lies here:
    "9:20:37 PM #22 CDR -1135 File Writer.cpp, Line 306
    Write error
    F: TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-S203N

    9:20:38 PM #23 Text 0 File DVDR.cpp, Line 3803

    9:20:38 PM #24 Phase 38 File dlgbrnst.cpp, Line 1764
    Burn process failed at 12x (16,620 KB/s) "

Try burning at speed 4x, update your firmware.
Also, youīre burning almost 100% of the available DVD space. Very risky.
Maybe Iīm wrong, so others can help you better.

I wouldnt trust that media and even he has 100 of them, even in the same spindle the MID can be different and the media quality changes also too.

So, try at 8x and then post back.

Look at your media. Look for flaws at the outer edge. That is where the errors in the log are occuring.

I have found CMC media to differ in quality based on whose brand actually appears on the spindle. House branded CMC media can have runs of defective disks included with visible problems in the coatings. I have seen this with Staples, Dynex and Nexxtech branded media.

If there are visible physical defects burning at a slower speed will not help you.

I have not seen these defects in name brand CMC media like HP, Imation or TDK.

A smaller image might burn just fine on disks with physical problems at the edge.

    Hi,

I have a similar problem in Dell Inspirion 6400. with TSST DVD+-RW

Whenever I burn a DVD it crashes around 1.8GB around 41% of total space.(Always around 1.8GB)
    I tried Verbatim and Philips
    Updated Firmware
Contact Dell Support, Initially they told it is a hardware fault and need to replace drive, now they say, it is Problem
    with Windows, reinstall my windows.

Anyone please help in this. I have attached the Nero log, I tried other softwares also with similar result.

    Regards
    Shijo Joseph

    Disable that:
    Multisession : TRUE
    Multisession type: : Start multisession
    Then get better media.

It would have been better if you started your own thread.

Your problem is different from the OP. You are taking responses to his problem as responses to yours. He has provided a great deal more info than you have. Start a new thread, fully desecribe your problems including error messages. If you are using nero post the nero log on your failed burns. If you have to burn a new disk to get the log use the Verbatim - then you won;t get a post telling you to use better media. (Well you probably will - from someone who can't read the log). Tell us the speed and configuration of your computer.

I personally think you have a dead drive. But - Dell support must have a reason why they want you to reload Windows. Find out why.

  15. Is this a 1st time malfunction, or has your burner functioned properly before this?

    To summarize:

    1) Check your disk before burning. Check to see there is no lint, smudges, imperfections in the dye.

    2) Burn at 4x or less (for now)

    3) Update to the latest firmware. Sometimes newer disks have compatibility problems with some burners

    4) Don't do anything during the burn. Don't surf. Don't play games. Don't run your antivirus scan. Don't use the computer. Period

    5) Try a disk image <4300MB. 4.37GB is the usual limit. 4428MB might be over.

To be honest, all I use is crap cheap media in cakeboxes. CMC and Ritek. I have made <1 coaster in >1000 burns (knock on wood) on a variety of profiles - data, DVD, ISO etc. I think the most common mistake is dust/ finger prints/ lint making the laser unable to write.
